Safflower Carrier & Cooking Oil 1 gallon: C

Safflower Carrier & Cooking Oil 1 gallon: C

$45.45

Flavorless, colorless oil expressed from the seeds of the safflower, this oil contains more polyunsaturates than any other oil, has a high smoke point making it ideal for deep frying, and is favored for salad dressing because it does not solidify when chilled. However, safflower oil lacks vitamin E, making it less nutritional than other oils on the market. Since it is odorless, light, and quick to absorb, it is becoming more popular and favored in the skincare field. This oil oxidizes very easily but can be used in massage blends. It may be beneficial for painful inflamed joints, and applied to bruises, sprains, and painful arthritis. Safflower massage oil has great moisturizing qualities which make it a good choice to include when mixing a massage oil or preparing a carrier oil blend. The shelf life is less than 3 months. It should be mixed with another carrier oil with good antioxidant qualities to increase the shelf life since it goes rancid quickly.

Olive Carrier & Cooking Oil 1 gallon: C

Olive Carrier & Cooking Oil 1 gallon: C

$54.15

Cosmetic and food grade oil. This is pure, certified organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It can be used for cooking or as a carrier oil for essential oils. Vegetable oils make an excellent base in which to dilute essential oils for body care products. They are sometimes referred to as fixed oils because they are not as volatile (easy to evaporate) as essential oils. Extra Virgin Olive oil contains 80% monounsaturated fatty acids which help reduce cholesterol levels. Extra virgin olive oil is full of vitamin E (a powerful anti-oxidant) which has been shown to reduce gastric acidity. The emollient effect of extra virgin olive oil protects against ulcers, it aids the passage of food through the intestines, and it reduces the risk of gallstones. Extra virgin olive oil beautifies skin, hair and nails. It is the ancient world’s traditional skin softener and basic massage oil.

Cosmetic and food grade oil. Vegetable oils are sometimes referred to as fixed oils because they are not as volatile (easy to evaporate) as essential oils. Most essential oils are so strong that a little goes a long way. Essential oils should be diluted in carrier oils for use in massage. Vegetable Oils make an excellent base in which to dilute essential oils for body care products. Our vegetable oils are 100% pure and natural. This is a highly saturated oil making it very stable against oxidation. Expeller-pressed, deodorized and organically bleached, it has a mild coconut taste and smell. Used in many cosmetic applications including soaps, sun preparations, creams, and lotions. This is food grade coconut oil, delicious in many recipes (see below). Avoid using mineral oils and baby oils for massage. Coconut oil has for centuries been used by traditional healers to soothe and cool the body and the mind. This product is ideal as a body moisturizer and baby oil, massage oil and for aftersun relief. Coconut Oil is usually considered the best carrier oil for massage oils. Because of its antioxidant properties, it actually feeds the skin. It prevents free radical damage to the skin unlike vegetable oils. Researchers have clearly shown that the oil from coconuts, a plant source, acts differently than the saturated fat from animal sources. The oil from coconuts is unique in nature and provides many health benefits obtainable from no other source. This edible oil has been found to aid the body in destroying dozens of harmful viruses including hepatitis C, herpes, and HIV. Coconut oil has been called the healthiest dietary oil on earth. If you’re not using coconut oil for your daily cooking and body care needs you’re missing out on one of nature’s most amazing health products. http://www.coconut-info.com: At one time coconut oil received negative press in the US because of its high level of saturated fat. However, modern research has shown that not all saturated fats are alike and that the fatty acids in coconut oil, the medium chain triglycerides, do not raise serum cholesterol or contribute to heart disease, but are in fact very healthy. Also, some negative studies done on coconut oil in the past was done on hydrogenated coconut oil, which has been altered from its original form. Other studies have clearly shown that traditional Asian cultures that eat significant amounts of coconut in their diet do not suffer from modern diseases seen in western cultures that promote a low-fat diet. Much research on the nutritional and medicinal benefits on coconut oil has surfaced in recent years. Much of that research has been done by Dr. Mary Enig. Dr. Enig has classified coconuts as a ”functional food,” which provides health benefits over and beyond the basic nutrients. She has specifically identified lauric acid as a key ingredient in coconut products: ”Approximately 50% of the fatty acids in coconut fat are lauri

Grapeseed Pure Carrier Oil 4 oz: K

$4.49

Most essential oils are so strong that a little goes a long way. Essential oils should be diluted in carrier oils for use in massage. Avoid using mineral oils and baby oils for massage. Grapeseed oil is a good second choice carrier especially for those whose skin seems not to absorb other oils very quickly. It does not leave a greasy feeling to the skin after application. Slightly astringent, it tightens and tones the skin. Does not aggravate acne. Odorless, penetrating, and very light. Our body care oils are usually used in conjunction with our essential oils. Vegetable oils are produced from nuts, seeds, grains and beans. They are sometimes referred to as fixed oils because they are not as volatile (easily evaporate) as essential oils. Vegetable Oils make an excellent base in which to dilute essential oils for body care products. Our vegetable oils are 100% pure and natural. Our cosmetic oils (such as Lanolin or Shea Butter) work well as carriers for essential oils and moisturizers.

Jojoba Pure Carrier Oil 4 oz: K

$12.87

Most essential oils are so strong that a little goes a long way. Essential oils should be diluted in carrier oils for use in massage. Avoid using mineral oils and baby oils for massage. A liquid wax rather than an oil, jojoba mimics sebum and penetrates skin very rapidly. It is therefore not good for massage, but excellent for nourishing skin. It is healing for inflamed skin, psoriasis, eczema, or any sort of dermatitis. It can help control acne and oily skin or scalp since excess sebum actually dissolves in jojoba. Jojoba is anti-oxidant and may help extend the life of other oils. Used also for hair care. Good for all skin types, but can sometimes clog pores. The myristic acid it contains is anti-inflammatory, so this could be a good base oil for treating rheumatism and arthritis. Use a 10% dilution or full strength. Our body care oils are usually used in conjunction with our essential oils. Vegetable oils are produced from nuts, seeds, grains and beans. They are sometimes referred to as fixed oils because they are not as volatile (easily evaporate) as essential oils. Castor Carrier & Supplement Oil 1 gallon: K

Castor Carrier & Supplement Oil 1 gallon: K

$46.84

Cosmetic and food grade oil. Also known as Castor Bean and Palma Christi. Castor Oil has been used therapeutically in ancient India, China, Persia, Egypt, Africa, Greece, Rome, the Americas, and in 17th century Europe. Today it is used as an emollient and skin softener, treatment of gastrointestinal problems, lacerations, and other skin disorders such as psoriasis. It is also found in many skin care products. One way it is used is to treat skin problems is to make a hot oil pad by pouring the castor oil on an absorbent material placed over the treatment area and then heating the pad to heat the castor oil. Taken internally, Castor Oil is used as a treatment for constipation, intestinal inflammation and worms. Castor Oil has been used as a laxative since antiquity. It’s mentioned by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, and beans from the Castor plant have been found in Egyptian tombs. Castor Oil’s laxative effect stems from its ability to prevent absorption of liquids from the intestinal tract. Don’t take Castor Oil if you have nausea, vomiting, an intestinal blockage, appendicitis, severe inflammatory intestinal disease, or any abdominal pain of unknown origin. Not recommended for pregnant and nursing women and children under 12. Grieve’s classic ‘A Modern Herbal’: Castor Oil is regarded as one of the most valuable laxatives in medicine. It is of special service in temporary constipation and wherever a mild action is essential, and is extremely useful for children and the aged. It is used in cases of colic and acute diarrhoea due to slow digestion, but must not be employed in cases of chronic constipation, which it only aggravates whilst relieving the symptoms. It acts in about five hours, affecting the entire length of the bowel, but not increasing the flow of bile, except in very large doses. The mode of its action is unknown. The oil will purge when rubbed into the skin, or injected. It is also used for expelling worms, after other special remedies have been administered. The only serious objections to the use of Castor Oil are its flavour and the sickness often produced by it. The nauseous taste may be disguised by administering it covered by Lemon oil, Sassafras oil and other essential oils, or floating on Peppermint or Cinnamon water, or coffee, or shaken up with glycerine, or given in fresh or warmed milk, the dose varying from 1 to 4 teaspoonsful. Probably the best way, however, is to administer it in capsules. Small repeated doses may be given in the intestinal colic of children. It may also be made into an emulsion with the yolk of an egg or mucilage; or with orange-wine or gin. Castor Oil forms a clean, light-coloured soap, which dries and hardens well and is free from smell. It has been recommended for medicinal use. The inferior qualities of the oil are frequently employed in India for soap-making. Externally, the oil has been recommended for various cutaneous complaints, such as ringworm, itch, etc. The

No preservatives – 100%-natural grapeseed oil. Grapeseed Oil, like almond and apricot kernal oil, is popular for use in massage blends. It is rich in skin-friendly linolenic acids, has a light, nutty flavor and is food and cosmetic grade. Our cosmetic oils (such as Lanolin or Shea Butter) also work well as carriers for essential oils and moisturizers. Grapeseed oil is also an ideal salad dressing, cooking , frying & baking oil that raises HDL (good cholesterol) and lowers the LDL (bad cholesterol), reducing a primary risk factor for heart disease. Grapeseed Oil, a byproduct of wine production, has been a favorite of European chefs for hundreds of years due to its many fine qualities as an edible oil. Recent studies have demonstrated that grapeseed oil may also be effective in correcting blood cholesterol levels in certain individuals, thereby reducing their risk of cardiac events. Today’s focus is not simply total cholesterol, but rather the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol) and LDL (the bad cholesterol), and the ratio of HDL to total cholesterol. Major studies have confirmed that for each percent increase in HDL, there is a 3-4% decrease in the incidence of cardiac events. In two studies conducted by Dr. David T. Nash, a research cardiologist at the State University of New York Health Science Center, it was shown that subjects who included a small amount of grapeseed oil daily in a low-fat diet over a four week period, experienced an increase in their HDL of 13%, and a decrease in their LDL of 7%. Grapeseed oil is one of the few natural foods known to raise HDL. HDL appears to reduce LDL by loosening it from the arterial walls so it can be carried to the liver for elimination. Grapeseed oil is also an excellent natural source of vitamin E and essential fatty acids necessary for normal cell metabolism and maintenance. By increasing the HDL in your blood, and reducing the LDL and triglycerides, through healthy diet and exercise, you may be adding years of wellness to your life. 1. Assmann G; Schulte H. Avocado Carrier & Cooking Oil Unrefined 16 fl oz: C

$23.18

Cosmetic and food grade oil. Avocados find their roots in Central America. Also known as Persea americana, the avocado was labeled the ”fruit of kings”. These luscious pear-shaped wonders are considered one of the most nutritious fruits on earth. That’s because avocados contain at least 75% monosaturated fats. The edible pulp of the avocado, which surrounds the seed, contains from 8 to 30% of a non-drying oil. Oil is separated by dehydrating the pulp, then pressing. Avocado oil has a light, but unique flavor that makes it an excellent choice for salad dressings or for use as a condiment. Refined avocado oil has the highest smoke point of any plant oil (255 C), so it is useful for high heat cooking. It can be infused with lemon, rosemary, basil or chili. It is a good source of monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, which makes it nutritionally beneficial. This unique, nutty-flavoured oil may be used in whipped potatoes, drizzled over steamed vegetables, in vinaigrette dressings, for sautéing, soups ands stews. Premium avocado oil is cold-pressed much like olive oil and is rich in vitamins E, D and E, and known to lower LDL levels. Studies conducted show that avocado oil reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and prostate incidence. It is free of trans fatty acids and cholesterol-inducing fats. Avocado oil has a higher viscosity than olive oil, and texturally is more pleasant than all other oils. Medium to heavy weight oil suitable for massage. Use up to one-fourth to a cream or salve base. Contains vitamins A, B, and D and is rich in lecithin. Has beneficial effect on dry skin and wrinkles. Add to soap recipes for a more moisturizing bar. Try it in a gentle baby soap or maybe a shaving soap for true luxury! We often find avocado oil in expensive creams and lotions. Or, for the ultimate indulgence try a massage oil with avocado oil. This oil does not have a long shelf life.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles NO CARRIER (capitalized) is a text message transmitted from a modem to its attached device (typically a computer), indicating the modem is not (or no longer) connected to a remote system. NO CARRIER is a response message that is defined in the Hayes command set. Due to the popularity of Hayes modems during the heyday of dialup connectivity, most other modem manufacturers supported the Hayes command set. For this reason, the NO CARRIER message was ubiquitously understood to mean that one was no longer connected to a remote system. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. The

Cosmetic and food grade oil. Wheat germ is essentially the ”embryo” of an unprocessed wheat kernel (wheat berry). Christianson calls wheat germ ”one of the real good superfoods … (one that) gives a fair dose of vitamin E, some B vitamins, zinc and some minerals.” Wheat germ is believed to improve colon function, nourish the skin, lower cholesterol and boost the immune system. Wheat germ is available in its natural flaked form, as well as in an extracted oil form. In his New Herb Bible (Fireside, 1992), Earl Mindell advises people with dry skin to use soaps containing wheat germ oil to minimize the depletion of the natural, protective oils in the skin. In The Natural Pharmacy (Prima Lifestyles, 1999), Schuyler Lininger Jr., D.C, et al., say that preliminary studies on the octacosanol present in wheat germ oil ”had promising effects on endurance, reaction time, and other measures of exercise capacity.” Wheat Germ Oil promotes renewal of normal new skin cells. Used in cosmetics because of its large vitamin E content. http://www.eaudrey.com/baby.htm ”Mother and Baby Care Wheat Germ and Honey Skin Cream Ingredients 2 teaspoons dried mint, sage, and rosemary 1/2 ounce beeswax 2 ounces lanolin 1/2 cup wheat germ oil 1 teaspoon honey 1/2 cup boiling water Instructions Put dried herbs in a cup or mug. Pour boiling water over and stir. Steep for ten minutes. Strain out the herbs and leave remaining ”tea” to cool. Melt beeswax and lanolin in heatproof glass in simmering water. Add the wheat germ oil. Continue stirring and add the herb tea very slowly. Remove from heat and add honey. Stir until creamy and transfer into containers. This cream lasts about 3 months-longer if refrigerated. It is good for both mother and baby’s over a year old. (Just in case…because of the added honey.) Belly Oil Ingredients 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil 2 tablespoons jojoba oil 3 drops lavender essential oil 3 drops tangerine essential oil 3 drops rose geranium essential oil 10 drops carrot seed oil Instructions Mix all ingredients together. Shake before each use. Massage into belly area or anywhere skin is itchy or marked. This blend of oils stops the itch from the stretching of skin-it may also minimize the appearance of stretch marks later.” Wheat germ oil is an excellent source of Octacosanol, an alcohol fatty acid naturally occuring in wheat germ. It is also a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. Octacosanol has been investigated long ago as an ergogenic (exercise performance–promoting) agent. These preliminary studies found that octacosanol had promising effects on endurance, reaction time, and other measures of exercise capacity.1 In another trial, 1,000 mcg per day of octacosanol for eight weeks was found to improve grip strength and visual reaction time, but it had no effect on chest strength, auditory reaction time, or end

Mary Enig. Shea Nut Butter Carrier & Skin Care Oil 4 fl oz: C

Shea Nut Butter Carrier & Skin Care Oil 4 fl oz: C

$7.27

This is Expeller-pressed Shea Nut Butter, processed and refined with carbon filtration to obtain a white butter with a light odor and creamy texture. Suitable for cosmetics. Not for internal use. Our cosmetic oils, such as Lanolin or Shea Butter, work well as carriers for essential oils, moisturizers and massage oils. The Shea tree (Butyrospermum parkii) is found along the West African Savannah region. The tree grows wild and it is not cultivated. It is small (usually 40 – 45 ft high) and has a spreading canopy, looking very much like the American Oak. It takes about fifty years to reach maturity. Shea nut butter has been used for various health remedies in Africa, especially skin problems, for thousands of years. Cleopatra used it in her cosmetics. It is a healing skin emollient. The tree produces plum-like fruits from which the Shea butter is extracted. The pulp of the fruit can be eaten and the oil, Shea butter, which is extracted from the seed or nut, has always been used in Africa as a skin soother, cosmetic base, cooking oil and lamp fuel. The butter is prepared by roasting the nuts, pounding or grinding them and then extracting the pulverized nuts to separate the butter. Because of its softness, unsaponifiable content & vitamin F, Shea Butter is excellent for a body massage. With the help of your body heat, it absorbs quickly into the skin. African Shea Butter helps reduce stretch marks, dark spots, blemishes, premature facial lines & eye bags. It is effective on dry, dull, rough & flaky skin. To soften stubborn callouses on the feet, soak your feet in warm water for about 15 mins. Scrub your heels with a bath stone. Change the warm water. Add 1 teaspoon of shea butter to the warm water. Soak your feet for a second time for 15-20 mins. Towel dry & moisturize with Shea Butter. Do this once or twice a week. To revitalize your hair, massage a generous amount of pure Shea Butter on your scalp and in your hair. Wrap with a warm towel for 30 mins. Remove the towel and style as usual. For soft silky hair, shampoo your hair the next day. This process is also useful for dry hair, dry scalp & dandruff. Apply African Shea Butter to your hair before swimming to help protect your hair from the chlorine & salt. After swimming, condition & rinse out your hair right away. Shea butter imparts a pleasant smooth feeling to the skin while improving its softness. It helps to: protect skin against weather and UV aggressions prevent wrinkle formation soothe irritated skin and heal chapped skin moisturize the epidermis revitalize and impart shine and luster to dry/damaged hairs http://recipes.herbalsoapsbyrj.com/recipes/category.php?CID=16: Basic Body Butter, Submitted by: Jennifer Collymore http://www.CollymoreCreations.com Ingredients: 1 Part Beeswax 1 Part Cocoa OR Shea Butter 1 Part Carrier Oil 1 Part Skin-Safe Fragrance or Essential Oil Directions ** Do no use both Cocoa Butter

Rosehip Seed Carrier & Skin Care 1 fl oz: C

Rosehip Seed Carrier & Skin Care 1 fl oz: C

$6.9

This is pure Rosehip Seed Oil: Cold expeller-pressed without the use of heat or solvents. Vegetable oils are produced from nuts, seeds, grains and beans. They are sometimes referred to as fixed oils because they are not as volatile (easy to evaporate) as essential oils. Most essential oils are so strong that a little goes a long way. Essential oils should be diluted in carrier oils for use in massage. Vegetable Oils make an excellent base in which to dilute essential oils for body care products. Our vegetable oils are 100% pure and natural. Rosehip seed makes a good oil for cosmetics and for tissue regeneration. It is also good for eczema, psoriasis, PMS and menopause. It may be combined with calendula oil to treat stretch marks, burns or scars. This is a very pale yellow oil with a light texture. It contains up to 35% linoleic acid and 44% GLA. Rosehip seed oil penetrates the skins upper layers very quickly making it a superb moisturizer. Rosehip Seed oil is an excellent natural moisturizing oil for routine daily skin care. In addition to its healing of sensitive, allergic, sun damaged, hyper pigmented, dry, aging, or problem skin, it also provides immediate relief for dry skin and eczema. Overnight, the light oil allows your skin to breathe, while it repairs itself and generates new cells. Rosehip oil can also be heated and massaged into dry or flaking areas of the hair and scalp as a moisturizer and hair repair oil. Extensive studies have shown Rosehip seed oil to have a positive effect on scars and stretch marks. http://healthyherbs.about.com/cs/aromatherapyrecip/ht/htroseoil.htm: How To Make Rose Face Oil, From Juli Kight: I have had great success with this formula in both aiding in healing of dermatitis, preventing sunburn and wrinkles and improving the texture and color. A “heavy bombardment group,” the 456th operated B-24 Liberator aircraft and was known unofficially as “Steed’s Flying Colts,” after its commander. The 456th Bomb Group flew 249 bombing missions from Italy while assigned to the Fifteenth Air Force. Its members earned two Presidential Unit Citations for valor in combat and participated extensively in the strategic bombing campaign against oil production targets including Ploieşti, Romania, that resulted in high bomber losses. Inactivated at the end of the war and allotted to the Air Force Reserve, the group was reactivated twice as a bomb and troop carrier group, and later had its lineage and history bestowed on a like-numbered wing of the United States Air Force.

$51.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Carrier oil, also known as base oil or vegetable oil, is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin in massage and aromatherapy. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, though some, such as olive, have a mild distinctive smell. Neither do they evaporate like essential oils, which are more volatile. The carrier oils used should be as natural and unadulterated as possible. Organic oils should be used where possible. Cold-pressing and maceration are the two main methods of producing carrier oils. Mineral oil should not be used as it is not absorbed by the skin. Infused oils are a combination of a carrier oil and plant material and they can be either commercially or domestically prepared. A base oil, often sunflower, is placed in an airtight container with the appropriate plant material for a time. Calendula and carrot oils are produced in this way.

The principal goal of this research is to produce hydrogen from biosustainable polyols, compounds containing a hydrocarbon chain with neighboring hydroxyl groups, such as glycerol or sorbitol.;Hydrogen is an energy carrier which can replace oil and reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions when it is generated from renewable sources. At present, hydrogen is derived from fossil fuels such as natural gas, naphtha or coal. We show that hydrogen can be produced by reforming of glycerol, sorbitol, glucose or sucrose in water at a low temperature (e.g. 200°C) over supported metal catalysts. A thermodynamic analysis that forms the basis of the process compares aqueous phase reforming of polyols with steam reforming of alkanes. Catalyst screening involving different noble metals and different supports indicates that alumina supported platinum catalysts are effective for hydrogen production by aqueous phase reforming of polyols. In an attempt to achieve high hydrogen yields, the effects of operating temperature, pressure, and nature of the feed are studied. Higher operation temperatures favor higher hydrogen yields while hydrogen production is strongly inhibited by high system pressure. Short chain polyols have better hydrogen selectivities than long chain polyols.;An effort is made to show that valuable chemicals can be derived from polyols. Glycerol and other polyols are potential sources of value-added chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol, a major commodity chemical now obtained from petroleum derived propylene. It can be generated by an alternative renewable route through hydrogenolysis of biodiesel-derived glycerol. The effects of hydrogenolysis conditions such as reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, water content in the feed and catalysts are evaluated. Both high temperature and high hydrogen pressure favor 1,2-propanediol formation.;This research discusses biorefinery processes and shows how biosustainable polyols can be used as a source of hydrogen and of

Firefighting Tanker Trucks and Tenders: A Fire Apparatus Photo Gallery

$15.72

Tanker trucks, also known as tenders, are used by more than 65% of all fire departments across America. Early tankers were converted from oil, fuel, milk, or chemical tank trucks. Some of these converted units were semi or tractor-trailer trucks, others were smaller, local oil or milk delivery trucks. Large fire apparatus manufacturers started to manufacture water tanker fire trucks in the late 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that custom-made water tankers became popular. Shown are tankers by all the major and minor fire apparatus manufacturers and regional builders, among conversions built by local shops. Included are tankers from Mack, Ford, GMC, Chevy, International, White, Brockway, Diamond T & Reo, Autocar, Kenworth, Peterbuilt, Freightliner, Volvo, UD, Marmom, Western Star, Crane Carrier Corp., FWD, Oshkosh, AMC, and others.

Flood indicators are off the scale, the seas are mountainous and a spring tide is about to strike the east coast. Air sea rescue and military personnel struggle to save lives but the worst is yet to come. When the storm reaches the south, the two forces of wind and tide will combine to send an enormous, one-in-a-thousand tidal surge up the Thames. Will the Thames Barrier save London, as it was intended to do? Or will the fifty feet high gates be overwhelmed by the huge wave surging towards it? When an oil supertanker explodes in the estuary, it ignites the river. The wall of fire and water thunders towards Britain’s capital. This devastating and compulsive thriller is the story of what happens next, and the desperate attempts to save the capital from destruction.

She was one of 12 Cimarron class oilers built on a joint Navy-Maritime Commission design later duplicated by the T3-S2-A1 type. Sangamon was laid down as Esso Trenton (MC hull 7) on 13 March 1939 by the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Kearny, New Jersey; launched on 4 November 1939, sponsored by Mrs. Clara Esselborn; operated by Standard Oil of New Jersey on runs from gulf coast ports to the east coast; and acquired by the United States Navy on 22 October 1940. Renamed Sangamon and designated a fleet oiler, AO-28, she was commissioned on 23 October 1940, with Commander J. H. Duncan in command. After service off the west coast and in Hawaiian waters, Sangamon shifted to the Atlantic Fleet in the spring of 1941, and through the Neutrality Patrol period, carried fuel from the gulf coast oil ports to bases on the east coast, in Canada, and in Iceland. On 7 December 1941, when the U.S. entered World War II, she was at Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland, offloading her liquid cargo. Within the week, she started south again to renew her schedule on a tighter time frame. In early 1942, she was designated for conversion to an auxiliary aircraft carrier. On 11 February, she arrived in Hampton Roads. Three days later, she was reclassified AVG-26; and on 25 February, she was decommissioned and conversion was begun at the Norfolk Navy Yard. During the spring and summer, the need for auxiliary carriers, later called escort carriers, increased. Work on Sangamon, three other Cimarron-class oilers, and 20 C-3 merchant hulls was

 MT Unirea

MT Unirea was a Romanian-flagged crude oil carrier, one of the biggest ships of the Romanian commercial fleet. She broke up and sank in 1982 in the Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea, 40 nautical miles 74 km south-south east of the Cape Kaliakra at a depth of 1,400 metres 4,600 ft after a mysterious explosion. The crew totalled 43 members of which 42 were rescued by Romanian and Soviet boats. The sinking of Unirea was classified by Lloyd’s List as the largest ship accident of 1982.The exact cause of accident is unknown but official reports suggest that during a vapor evacuation of the central number 3 tank an explosive mixture formed alongside the evacuation hole that could have been ignited by multiple sources but especially electrostatic energy. The explosion of the central number 3 tank had a devastating effect on the integrity of the ship triggering a series of explosions that destroyed the separating wall of the central and starbord tanks favoring the expansion of the volatile elements across the ship.

Chapters: Betelgeuse Incident, the Sinking of the Rochdale and the Prince of Wales, 1979 Fastnet Race, Rms Leinster, Rms Tayleur, Ss Connemara, Kingstown Lifeboat Disaster. Excerpt: The Betelgeuse incident, also known as the Betelgeuse or Whiddy Island disaster, occurred on 8 January 1979, at around 1:00 a.m., when the oil tanker Betelgeuse exploded in West Cork, Ireland, at the offshore jetty of the Whiddy Island Oil Terminal, due to the failure of the ship’s structure during an operation to discharge its cargo of oil. The tanker was owned by Total S.A., and the oil terminal was owned and operated by Gulf Oil. The explosion and resulting fire claimed the lives of 50 people (42 French nationals, 7 Irish nationals and 1 United Kingdom national). Only 27 bodies were recovered. A further fatality occurred during the salvage operation with the loss of a Dutch diver. During the 1960s, developments in the pattern of oil transportation indicated that it would soon become most economic to move oil between the Middle East and Europe using Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) vessels. These vessels were so large that they would not be able to enter most of the older ports on the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea and English Channel coasts. Accordingly, it was judged appropriate to build a new oil terminal in Europe capable of handling the largest vessels that were planned. The intention was that oil coming from the Middle East would be off-loaded at this terminal and then stored for transshipment to European refineries using smaller vessels. The closure of the Suez Canal in 1967 as a result of the Six-Day War reinforced the economic viability of this scheme. Oil shipments had to come round the Cape of Good Hope, thus avoiding the vessel size constraints previously imposed… More:
