Green Companies: Promising Opportunities

Times are changing and along with it are different industries. More than ever before, people are now focusing on the environment and its welfare. With more and more industries pushing towards going green and sustainability, it’s no surprise to see more and more green career opportunities rise from the shadows of the customary jobs we know.

As whole industries shift to green practices, new job possibilities are opening up for those that have the skills to bridge the divide between the old and the new, energy-efficient dawn. Corporations are now partnering with non-profit organizations and hiring corporate social managers. In addition, these same companies are waking up to the potential in green marketing: that reducing the environmental impact is as good for future profits as it is for the planet at large.

Jumpstarting your green career is no different from starting a regular one. There are no secrets or industry inside techniques. As a relatively young field, you just need to select your choice of green economy where you can apply your acquired job skills, such as machine operations, sales, management, web skills, and even clerical and administrative skills. A nonprofit or sustainable industry or coordinating sustainable practices from within a corporate entity are just some of the places where one can find a new career.

Fortunately, as previously mentioned, environmental responsibility is a hot topic, and the number of industries going green increases by the day. And along with the big players, even SMEs are going green, thus providing more opportunities for people to start building their green careers. Among the big names are hotel and resort industry giants Marriott and Hilton. Following in their footsteps are minor developers and hotel operators, helping create a greener and more energy efficient leisure market.

There are green jobs, such as in the organic food industry, ecotourism and marketing of energy-efficient technology, that anyone with basic industry knowledge and a good work ethic can get in and create a great green career. However, there are also green jobs, like in green building or solar panel installing, require a special set of skills that cannot be acquired by working from other industries. Luckily, there are classes, some provided by non-profit organizations, that teach these skills to fill the growing needs. Having these classes around provides two benefits: First, it supplies special skills that will provide a person a job, thus, reducing the number of unemployment; secondly, that green job exists for the sake of having more earth-friendly businesses, thus, also benefitting the environment.

With green industries and green careers establishing themselves and slowly making it mainstream, we can expect more benefits to come. Teaching us values that we should have learned thousands of years ago, the green movement is one cause that is proving to the benefit not only the Earth but man as well.

The Green Howards were amalgamated with The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, all Yorkshire-based regiments in the King’s Division, to form The Yorkshire Regiment on the (6 June 2006). The regiment was formed in 1688 from independent companies of infantry in Devon. Until 1751 it was known by the names of its various colonels, when it became the 19th Regiment of Foot. In 1782 all regiments of foot without a special designation were given county title “to cultivate a connection with the County which might at all times be useful towards recruiting”. The regiment became the 19th (1st North Riding of Yorkshire) Regiment of Foot, and its main recruiting efforts continued in this area until 2006, particularly in Middlesbrough, Redcar, Northallerton and Scarborough. In 1875 Princess Alexandra, Princess of Wales presented new colours to the 1st Battalion at Sheffield, and consented to the regiment bearing her name, thus becoming the 19th (1st Yorkshire North Riding – Princess of Wales’s Own) Regiment of Foot. The regiment adopted a cap badge consisting of the Princess’s cypher “A” combined with the Dannebrog or Danish cross and topped by her coronet. The Princess became Queen Alexandra in 1901, and was the regiment’s Colonel-in-Chief from 1914 until her death in 1925. In 1881 the infantry of the line were reorganised. The regular regiments of foot lost their numbers, instead taking on a territorial or county title, and amalgamating with the militia battalions and rifle volunteers in its designated regimental district. Excerpt: The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own) was an infantry regiment of the British Army, formed in 1800 to provide sharpshooters, scouts and skirmishers. It was distinguished by its use of green uniforms as standard in place of the traditional red, the first regular infantry corps in the British Army to do so. The new regiment was armed with the Baker rifle which, though it took two or three times as long to load and required a separate calibre of ball (leading to supply issues), was considerably more accurate and effective at a longer range than the standard issue Brown Bess musket of the line regiments and regular light infantry companies. This rifle was an accurate weapon for its day with reported kills being taken at 100 to 300 yards (270 m) away. During the Peninsula War, Rifleman Thomas Plunkett of the 1st Battalion, 95th Rifles shot the French General Auguste-Marie-François Colbert at a range that may have been even greater. He then shot a second French officer who rode to the general’s aid, proving that this was not just a lucky shot. By comparison, a standard issue Brown Bess musket was unlikely to hit a man-sized target at ranges beyond 80 yards. In 1800, an “Experimental Corps of Riflemen”, was raised by Colonel Coote Manningham and Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon.
