Order-Matic Featured in Manufacturing Today Magazine

Back in the spotlight of the manufacturing industry, Order-Matic (OMC), an experienced innovator of point of sale and restaurant communications equipment, was featured in the Summer 2010 issue of Manufacturing Today Magazine. In an article titled “Game Changers”, Order-Matic was featured for helping innovate the electronic communication system of the food service industry.

The History of Order-Matic

To paint a full portrait of the company’s history, Manufacturing Today interviewed Bill Cunningham, the CEO who started Order-Matic in 1955. He originally conducted the company out of his garage, where he developed his first patented curb service ordering system with a built-in speaker. After a highly successful initial installation at the former Cattleman’s Drive-In at the Oklahoma City stockyards, the system began to set the standard for electronic communication in food service.

Order-Matic then got a lucky break when it was hired by Troy Smith, the founder of a drive-in restaurant that would eventually be known as SONIC®, and introduced its first point of sale system. This innovative new system was able to track cooking and delivery times.

“With this point of sale system, Order-Matic created its own new business intelligence for operating quick-serve restaurants,” the company told Manufacturing Today.

Order-Matic: Fast Food Innovators

Today Order-Matic has a staff of 140 employees and caters exclusively to the fast-food market. Order-Matic’s ability to discover way to improve efficiency and communications has helped them become a trendsetter and innovator in the fast food industry.

In Order-Matic’s manufacturing plant, workers focus on resolving problems quickly and the company’s management maintains an open door policy. Not only are the point-of-sale machines not manufactured until they are ordered, but they are specifically made with the customer in mind.

The Manufacturing Today article was written in recognition of Order-Matic’s 55th anniversary. “The longevity of OMC confirms this Oklahoma company’s dedication to creating innovative, new products and providing customers with the finest equipment and service available in the industry,” the company says.

Mr. Cunningham encourages other entrepreneurs to truly love their work. He advises them to expect to work harder than they would at other jobs and to have a passion for their product. ME. HEATON, SENIOR. The grandfather of the subject of our memoir was John Heaton of Ossett, who was born on September ‘4, 1736. He married one Mary Metcalfe, a person in a somewhat superior position in life to himself, the daughter of Urban Metcalfe, a cloth manufacturer of Hunslet; which was then, as will have been gathered from the particulars given in the preceding chapter, a small manufacturing village. It was probably the fact of his having married this Hunslet bride, who there is reason to believe was in a small way an heiress, that induced John Heaton to remove from Ossett to the spot where his wife had been born. At all events he settled in Hunslet very soon after his marriage to Mary Metcalfe in July 1765, and remained in or near Leeds for the rest of his days. Three children were born of the marriage, the eldest being John Heaton, the father of Dr. Heaton, born July 22, 1769. The two other children were a son William, and a daughter Hannah. ‘In the year 1783,’ says Dr. Heaton in hisjournal, ‘ my grandfather purchased part of the small estate in Hunslet which I now (1859) possess. His father-in-law, Urban Metcalfe, was residing on it at the time ; his name as tenant being mentioned in the conveyance. My grandfather himself afterwards resided on his own property, and his widow continued to live there after his death. He died August 1st, 1790, and was buried in the graveyard attached to the chapel at Hunslet, then a chapel- of-ease to the Leeds parish church. His will makes his widow and my father executors.
