What Are Solar Panels

what are solar panels

Solar panels in the UK. How viable an option are they?

When looking at
solar energy advantages and disadvantages
one of the disadvantages of solar panels is the impact of cloud cover on the efficiency of photo voltaic solar panels. In fact cloud cover is the biggest concern regarding solar panels UK residents mention. Is it as big a problem as suggested?

There is a definite effect on the efficiency of solar panel during cloud cover. Estimates vary, but realistically on a day with low, thick cloud cover you could see your solar panels running at around 25% of the level that you would expect on a clear day. So there is no doubt that during thick cloud cover you lose a lot of efficiency.

On most days you will see cloud cover interspersed with periods of clear sky, so most days arent an entire washout for solar generation. You might be surprised to see how little effect scattered and broken clouds have on electricity production.

So, is this a really big problem for solar panels in the UK? Surely its always cloudy here? Well, although you could be forgiven for thinking that at times it is, in fact our weather is nowhere near as dire as we sometimes think. You might be surprised to learn that there is actually only cloud cover over the south of England for around 50% of the time, the other half of daylight hours the skies are completely (or almost completely) clear. Beyond the clear skies, there is another 25% of the time when there are clouds but they are broken and scattered. In both clear skies and during scattered and broken cloud solar generation should be efficient.

In fact, studies show that it is only around 30% of the time that the skies over southern England are entirely overcast due to cloud, rain, fog and snow. Not as bad as you thought? You are not going to be free of the grid since a lot of that 30% is going to be during the winter, but looking over the whole year solar panels will work here in the UK. You need to look at the balance of the year, as you will often be selling your surplus energy to the grid during good weather, so solar is a solid all round investment.

For the most part your solar panels will be efficient here in the UK and if you choose the right system your gain could be even greater. The other good news is that next time you look up at a grey sky you will know that its actually normally much better than that!

When Kris Bjornsen and her fellow slaves were dumped on an uninhabited planet by the alien overlords called Catteni, there was no guarantee they would survive. Without the help of Zainal, a renegade Catteni exiled by his own people, they might all have been food for the predators of the new world. But they did survive, building a civilization and a home on the planet they named Botany. In time they were instrumental in driving the Catteni away from Earth and neighboring planets. Botany is free now, and so is the devastated Earth. The survivalist days are over, and the time has come for Botany to find its place in the power struggles of the newly configured universe. As an agricultural planet, rich in resources, Botany has more to offer than the colonists may have thought. A trip to Earth shows Kris and Zainal very dramatically how weakened the home planet is after years of Catteni domination, and how much Earth needs what Botany can give. Other worlds too have had their wealth skimmed away by the Catteni: the nearby planet of Barevi is little more than a corrupt bazaar, where bits and pieces of Earth’s once powerful technology can be traded for grain and mineral ores. Earth needs food, and the resources to rebuild. Botany needs technology – from solar satellite panels to simple batteries – and, some say, the will to protect itself from being overrun by refugees who may or may not have strength and skills. As alien influence fades, the people of Botany must decide what kind of world they will become.

Chapters: Topaz Solar Farm, Solana Generating Station, Davidson County Solar Farm, California Valley Solar Ranch, Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center, Mojave Solar Park, Rancho Cielo Solar Farm. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Topaz Solar Farm is a proposed 550 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant, to be built by First Solar, Inc. (thin film CdTe solar module maker) in the Carrizo Plain, northwest of California Valley at a cost of over $1 billion. On August 14, 2008, Pacific Gas and Electric announced an agreement to buy all the power from the power plant. Commenting on this project and a nearby 250 MW project announced at the same time, Daniel Kammen, the director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at University of California, Berkeley, said “This scale is ten times larger than what was being talked about awhile ago”. OptiSolar, the instigator of the project, had bought 9.5 square miles (25 km) of ranchland, In November 2009, First Solar announced that it had purchased options to an additional 640 acres (260 ha) from Ausra’s canceled Carrizo Energy Solar Farm. First Solar would reconfigure the project to minimize the use of land covered by the Williamson Act. The project would utilize thin-film PV panels designed and manufactured by First Solar. The project would deliver approximately 1,100 gigawatt-hours (GW·h) annually of renewable energy. The plant’s power would be generated during the middle of the day, when demand for electricity and price is much higher than at night. The project is expected to begin construction in 2010, begin power delivery in 2011, and be fully operational by 2013. California utilities are mandated to get 20% of their energy from renewable sources by 2010. … More: http://booksllc

 New Sustainable Homes

New Sustainable Homes

$16.42

As the costs for energy and building materials soar, sustainable homes are moving into the mainstream. What makes a sustainable house a sustainable home? New Sustainable Homes will address that question by presenting a wide range of projects where the architect and client have made a conscientious effort to incorporate sustainability into the design of the home and construction materials used in its execution. The result is a home that is less toxic to live in, is cheaper to operate, and often gives back to the environment rather than taking away. Also, and this is the most important consideration for many, it is a great looking, highly livable home that not only retains its value but has been shown to increase in value more quickly than more conventionally conceived houses because of cheaper operating expenses. These designers and their clients are not on the fringe. New Sustainable Homes will show readers will learn about the many materials and techniques that make up today’s sustainable house, including: 1) the use of pervious concrete on driveways that allows water to seep through to the water table below. 2) using bio-fiber panels in leiu of plywood for interior finishing 3) using organic, green roofs that improve insulation, absorb sound and manage storm-water runoff 4) solar water heating systems 5) use of high thermal performance windows 6) photovoltaic electrical systems Homes from around the country including California, Texas, Vermont, Michigan and Florida as well as internationally (particularily Australia where there is a particularly strong interest in stustainable housing) will be presented in the book by such nationally andinternationally recognized architects as Pugh+Scarpa Architecture, E. Cobb Architects, James Grose, and Steven Erlich. Approximately 15 projects will be included complete with professional photography and floor plans and detailed drawings that illustrate certain sustainable features.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Solar Power for Your Home

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Solar Power for Your Home

$5.29

– Solar power is starting to make a resurgence in the energy market. This book should benefit from the Department of Energy’s recently enacted Million Solar Roofs campaign aimed at increasing America’s use of solar power.– Competitive books are written by authors with either solar system engineering backgrounds or without any real credentials at all. Dan Ramsey is a knowledgeable and recognizable book-writing veteran within the home-improvement category.– This book is the first aimed at the average homeowner who is interested in affordable and independent power generation and wants to determine whether solar power is the way to go and what’s involved, but who is not interested in (or capable of) doing the actual installation.Demand for solar power has grown consistently by 20 to 25% per annum over the past 20 years. In the past few years this rate has actually climbed to 40%. Why? Advances in solar cells, lower costs of using solar power, unpredictable utility rates, consumer frustration with the lack of utility choices, and environmental issues have all converged to create a renewed interest in and rising demand for solar power. Over 25 states, and many more municipalities, are now offering tax and utility credits to those who use solar energy. The Complete Idiot’s Guide RM to Solar Power for Your Home will show average readers how to generate their own electricity with solar panels. The book will cover everything short of how to physically install solar panels — something that should be left to the experts.
